Terms

Acronyms

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
Everyday actions, such as dressing, eating, bathing, transferring, and continence.

Acute Care
Medical care that is required for a short amount of time.

Adult Day Care
Supervision of social and recreational activities in a public setting.  Some programs also provide health services.

Alternate Level of Care
Received as a hospital inpatient while waiting to be placed in a nursing home or while waiting for home care arrangements to be made.

Assisted Living Facility
Provides services for people who need help with activities of daily living.

Care Management Services
Professional coordinates/monitors long term care services.

Chronic Illness
Illness with at least one of the following: permanent, disabling, requires long term supervision or care.

Comfort Care
Provided to ease pain and illness-related symptoms.

Community Based Services
Long term care that is provided to the elderly and those with disabilities in their homes or a public setting.  Services allow them to remain living independently in their homes.

Consumer Directed Care
Program where an individual decides how limited funds, services, or other resources are used.

Continence
Ability to maintain control of bowel and bladder function or care for a catheter or colostomy bag.

Custodial Care
Non-medical care, such as assisting with eating, bathing, toileting, or taking medication.

Durable Medical Equipment
Primarily used for medical purposes in the home and can be used repeatedly, such as walkers, wheelchairs, and oxygen tents.

Hands-On Assistance
Physical assistance with activities of daily living.

Home Care
Assists with personal hygiene, dressing, feeding, etc.

Home Health Care
Health services provided in the home, such as skilled nursing care, occupational or speech therapy.

Hospice Care
Program that cares for people who are terminally ill.

Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs)
Activities related to independent daily living, such as preparing meals, grocery shopping, performing light housework, or managing money.

Medicaid
Program supported by federal, state, and local funds that is administered by each state to provide health care to those eligible.

Medicaid Buy-In for Working People with Disabilities
Program that offers Medicaid benefits to eligible working people with disabilities who earn more than Medicaid ordinarily allows.

Medicare
Federal health insurance program for those 65 and older and some disabled individuals.

Medicare Supplemental Policy
Private insurance policy that covers some or all of the patient responsibility on Medicare approved services after Medicare provides payment.

Medigap Policy
Private insurance policy that covers some or all of the patient responsibility on Medicare approved services after Medicare provides payment.

Nursing Home
Licensed facility that provides general nursing care to the chronically ill and those who need help with activities of daily living.

Nursing Home Transition and Diversion Waiver
Program for people with disabilities and senior citizens that offers special services to help people remain independently living in their homes.

Palliative Care
Provided to ease physical pain and illness-related symptoms.

Personal Care
Non-medical care, such as assisting with eating, bathing, or toileting.

Respite Care
Services provided that allow a break from caregiving responsibilities.

Government program to help low income individuals and families with the cost of housing.

Skilled Nursing Care
Services that must be given or supervised by registered nurses.

Spend Down
Requiring an individual to use up most of his or her income and assets to meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.

Spend Down

Stand-by Assistance.
Standing close to an individual in case assistance is needed.

Substantial Assistance
Hands-on or standby assistance is needed for activities of daily living.

Substantial Supervision
Needing someone to watch over and/or provide direction to an individual with some form of dementia.

Toileting
Getting to and from the toilet and performing associated hygiene.

Traumatic Brain Injury Waiver
A Medicaid funded program that provides funds to assist people in remaining independently in their homes for those who qualify.  Applicants must be diagnosed with TBI or related condition, injured after the age of 18, enrolled in Medicaid, and in need of nursing facility level of care.

Transferring
Moving into and out of a bed or chair.
